Written Test
  • It is required that each applicant take a written test that consists of 25 questions multiple choice and true/false questions.
  • A score of 70% is required to pass the classroom portion of class

Range Qualification
  • It is required that each applicant participate in 50 round course of fire scoring a 70% or better to pass the range portion of class.  
  • .32 caliber and higher Revolver or Semi-Auto is acceptable for qualification
  • Military Range Qualification Record is acceptable.  Must be dated within 5 years from date of application

Student Handbook
  • When you are officially enrolled in a CAPS CHL course an email prior to your class date will be sent with the password to access your student handbook.  

CHL-100 Course Completion Certificate
  • Once you have completed the required class hours, we will give you a CHL-100 to add to your packet to be sent to TXDPS for processing.  

Application Photo
  • Texas Residents will automatically have their TX Driver's License photo  used on the concealed handgun license  
  • Non Residents without a Texas DL or ID will need to complete the Photo Holder Form and send in photo. ( obtain a photo at places such as Walgreens, CVS or Walmart)  It has also been heard that the FAST locations are now offering a photo service, but keep in mind that DPS standards are very strict on clarity of the photos, so make sure your photos are of good quality and choose a reliable source for those photos. 

Application Fingerprints
  • Fingerprints must be obtained from an approved location contracted by DPS
  • You must  get new fingerprints, if you have a set already on file for another purpose will not be allowed to process your application.  
  • The department has been tasked to create procedures for those who live in a county of 46,000 people or less, with no facility capable of processing digital or electronic fingerprints within a 25-mile radius.
